World Milk Day
June 1st
«It has great benefits for the body,
especially for children in full development.»

June 1st is World Milk Day. This date was established by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) in 2001 with the aim of encouraging the consumption of dairy products worldwide.

The aim of this day is to promote the consumption of milk and its derivatives based on the benefits they provide to the body.

In Uruguay, since June 1, 2006, this day has been commemorated by also celebrating the day of the dairy industry worker.

The main food consumed from the moment babies open their eyes for the first time is milk.

This rich and nutritious natural food has great benefits for the body, especially for children in full development.

The main component is water, followed by fat, proteins (casein, lactoalbumins and lactoglobulins) and carbohydrates (mainly lactose). It also contains moderate amounts of vitamins (A, D, and vitamins of group B, especially B2, B1, B6 and B12) and minerals (phosphorus, calcium, zinc and magnesium).

The consumption of this food is essential in a healthy diet.

Milk is not synonymous with breakfast and snacks only; we can provide milk by means of:

  • Cream soups.
  • White Sauce for different preparations: Cannelloni, lasagna, gratin vegetables.
  • Milk desserts, for example rice pudding with cinnamon and vanilla.
  • Fruit smoothies.
  • Homemade cakes.

The recommendation is to consume 2 to 3 servings of milk and its derivatives daily.

We leave you with the homework for this week to count whether you are consuming 2 or 3 servings a day.
